The server can run locally or on any remote computer, that is reachable through TCP/IP.
The EtherCAT server provides functionality of an EtherCAT master. A client can connect on the given socket interface with the server.
Beside this socket interface a command line interface is provides, with allows operation of the EtherCAT server without a client.
Control of the attached EtherCAT slaves is provided through simple commands. All for communication necessary services as PDO, SDO, NMT-State and additional device configuration are possible through the server.
Beside that it is possible to generate device information from the textual device description, which is present as a XML file, and to write these configuration data into the device. Additionally access to the internals of the EtherCAT slave controller is possible through the given interface.
The possibility of a firmware update for EtherCAT devices exists through the implemented File over EtherCAT (FoE) service.
The EtherCAT server can run as a stand alone component. This component can provide a basis for customer specific applications. Beside that control of the server can be done using a graphical interface. The EtherCAT Device Monitor by port is using the EtherCAT server in such a way.
To use the EtherCAT server, a PC with Windows 2000, Windows XP, Windows Vista or Windows 7 is necessary. Beside that Linux is supported as well. The EtherCAT server must be started using administrator rights, on Windows systems as well as on Linux systems.
